Cannabis-derived (CBD) products are the next big thing to take over the beauty industry, and our makeup bags! If you’re wondering what the hype is, we’ve got the answers.

First, why is it so good for us?

Well, CBD or cannabidiol is one of the key chemical components of cannabis. It’s extracted from the flowers and leaves of hemp (and not from the seeds like hemp oil). The compound has many health benefits such as anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties and is known to alleviate a long list of medical conditions and skin concerns. Now, it’s in everything, from ice-cream to candles to mascara, and it’s not slowing down, especially in the beauty industry.

The Beauty Brands Adopting the substance

In 2017, Milk Makeup came out with their Kush Mascara which is now a cult favourite, with YouTubers like Jamie Genevieve and Jeffree Star raving about it. Milk, a brand that recently went vegan, used the oil as a vegan alternative to a traditional substance in mascara, beeswax!

Traditionally, Beeswax is added to mascara to bind the fibres to lashes so the vegan brand looked for alternatives which led them to a hemp-derived formula. The innovative formula promises to add 15x more volume and added thickness. Its creamy consistency acts as a moisturiser, conditioning the lashes throughout the day and makes the mascara easy to apply. And, Beauty Junkies aren’t disappointed with the results, claiming that their lashes are more voluminous and last all day.

Now, many more are adopting the ingredients and jumping on the trend because the effects are so amazing. Brands like First Aid Beauty, Makeup Revolution, and Sol-De-Janeiro have since come out with products. And, there are brands like Peter Thomas Roth whom are just getting started, and planning on an entire collection laced with the stuff! In the beauty industry, there’s been a faster adoption to skincare because the oil contains retinoid that’s great for acne and can clear the skin.
